Tell Me A Story (There are only six) – Part 1

All good stories have a challenge that needs to be resolved, and the astrological chart gives us a very simple way of sorting out those challenges. It all comes down to the opposition. We’ll start with the 1-7 story:

Relationships

The 7th House describes the qualities that I don’t feel I possess myself so I am looking to find them in somebody else. It tells something about ‘you’ and something about what I perceive is the ‘us’ in the relationship.

When things are in balance, we’re both happy. But what if I feel that you are pulling me too much into the ‘us’ of the relationship and I lose touch with ‘me’? Or what if I am so focussed on ‘me’ that I lose touch with ‘you’? Then we have a problem.

Another way of interpreting the 1-7 opposition is to think that the 1st house represents ‘us’ and the 7th house represents ‘them’. In traditional astrology, ‘them’ was often referred to as the ‘open enemy’. This is someone we know who is working against us. The tough thing to admit here is that we actually have a relationship with our open enemies; we have a common platform. A good mediator will help us see where the other side is coming from, acknowledge that both sides have committed concerns about the same topic, and help us find a way to compromise. Yuk. Who wants to compromise when we are so programmed to win? The lesson here is that building good relationships is never about winning.

When trying to resolve the struggle between two planets in opposition in your natal chart, the challenge is to see that both planets are being honoured. You can’t let one planet dominate or get its own way all the time, or the other one will act out and demand your attention. This ‘acting out’ is often projected to the arena of relationships. This will be a theme in all six parts of this series.

If you have an opposition across the 1st and 7th Houses, or if you have one or more planets in Aries opposite one or more planets in Libra, you may be especially tasked to work out some issues regarding relationships.
